The Settlers II is made in the genre of real-time strategy and has a number of features typical for games of this orientation. “Settlers”, like most “classic” real-time strategies, follow the following pattern: collecting resources and building a settlement; army creation and expansion in order to capture new sources of resources; an attack by an adversary in order to intercept access to resources and / or destroy his army and camp.

The game has the ability to go through a campaign (a certain sequence of missions) or play the so-called "Scripts", user missions. Both single-user and multi-user are supported according to the Split screen method.

The map of the area is conventionally divided into hexagonal cells. This means that from any cell, a maximum of six adjacent cells can be paved. The conventional zones used by workers of certain buildings for their activities, and the areas held by military buildings, have a hexagonal shape. The more free space around the cell, the larger the building can be built on it. Buildings are divided into five types: flag, small, medium, large and mine. Flags indicate the beginning and end of the road; flags are located both at the forks and at the exit from the building. Between ports cruise ships. In the game, the port is a large type of building that is built where it is marked with a yellow castle with an anchor. Ships are made in shipyards and can transport goods or go on expeditions.

In order to increase the boundaries of the settlement, it is necessary to put a military building at the edge of the location, for example, a guard tower, a fortress or a barracks. As soon as the first soldier settles in the building, the area around the building will expand.
